Quilting precut sizes: charm packs, layer cakes, jelly rolls, and more
Precut names are memorable, but they can hide the measurement that determines whether a pattern works. Start with the actual cut and count your pack.

Common precut measurements
- Charm pack: usually 5 × 5-inch squares.
- Layer cake: usually 10 × 10-inch squares.
- Jelly roll: usually 2½-inch by width-of-fabric strips.
- Mini charm: usually 2½ × 2½-inch squares.
- Honey bun: usually 1½-inch by width-of-fabric strips.
- Fat eighth: commonly about 9 × 21 inches.
- Fat quarter: commonly about 18 × 21 inches.
Pack counts vary
A layer cake or jelly roll is often described as containing 40–42 pieces, but collections and manufacturers vary. Some packs repeat prints and some omit them. Count your own pack before relying on a pattern’s marketing name.
Pinked edges change where you measure
Many commercial squares and strips have zigzag-cut edges. Pattern designers may treat the outside points or the inner valleys as the nominal measurement. Follow the specific pattern’s seam and alignment instructions instead of trimming automatically.
Approximate conversions are for shortlisting only
Our converter compares fabric area, which is useful for asking whether a project is in the right neighborhood. It cannot guarantee a pattern substitution because continuous strips, directional prints, seam allowances, and cutting waste all matter.
Use the finder to compare real projects by quantity, skill, video support, and extra yardage.
